Our Rating:
And so the effervescent BE YOUR OWN PET return with a desirable taster from their forthcoming eponymous debut, produced by none-other than Steve MacDonald from cultier-than-cult LA punksters Red Kross.

It seems he’s been buffing his Albini-style credntials ‘til they shine too, as “Adventure”s massive, cave-dwelling drums and looming vulture basslines are the perfect bedrock for the dentist’s drill guitar spuzz and Jemina’s playful, charismatic yelp which sounds like an unholy alliance of Kristin Hersh, Patti Smith and Annabella Lwin (ask your Dad) on this outing.

So it’s an exhilarating, cocksure stomp basically, which gains extra points for conspiring to rhyme “bridesmaids” with “highways” and presenting us with a brace of fine B-sides. Yes, both of these – “Ouch” and the immortally-monikered “We Will Vacation, You Will Be My Parasol” (mais oui, mademoiselle!) – are both demos, but the stripped-down, fighting-its-way-from-the-clutches-of-lo-fi recording quality does little to dent the suss and enthusiasm displayed by BYOP and both of these sound fully-formed and manically fantastic even in this embryonic state.

They’re back on UK shores in April, so get ready to rumble basically. That said, it’s hard to swallow their new ‘outdoor type’ image as displayed on the sleeve.   They look about as effective as Elmer Fudd bumbling around on the trail of Bugs Bunny.
