Review: 'GOOD SHOES'
'WE ARE NOT THE SAME (EP)'

-  Label: 'BRILLE RECORDS (www.goodshoes.co.uk)'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '20th March 2006'

Our Rating:
This is fun, an authentic sounding spiky punk band - with cheeky vocals that run up, jab you in the arm and then peg it, leaving you standing there shaking your fist.

Although “We Are Not The Same” hasn’t got the bile that the Sex Pistols had, or the razor sharp sardonic tone of The Jam either – its encouraging that GOOD SHOES are giving it a go, and coming across too badly either, if not slightly run-of-the-mill.

“We Are Not The Same” is angular and loud enough to make your ears bleed, however the rest of the EP becomes a bit tedious, and they come across like they are trying far too hard to push the ‘say it like it is’ lyrics.

Some lyricists have it, and others don’t. And since the Arctic Monkeys became mainstream, we have been inundated with bands trying to emulate that ‘comical yet observational’ tone in their songs, and not succeeding at all.

For example, when the Good Shoes start yelling out “I travel on public transport!’ (Things To Make and Do), it’s hardly the statement of the century is it? Most people do at some point in their lives. Anyone can come up with tripe like that, look at these lyrics I just came up with: “Sometimes I eat food/And sometimes I treat myself/By not washing my teeth before I go to bed at night/ But not often because I am aware of the dangers of plaque…” Add your own tune, but personally I think it works. Or maybe I’ll just stick to the day job. But you get my point.
