Review: 'COXON, GRAHAM/ DUELS'
'London, Hammersmith Apollo, 3rd April 2006'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
DUELS take to stage with understated cool. Taking tips from Interpol’s casual wardrobe, front man Jon Foulger’s Jarvis Cocker mannerisms and stony vocals give them a pronounced, dramatic sound. Brother Jimmy’s star jumping take on Coxon is complimented by some strangling solos whilst the sloping bass, buzzing keyboard and fiery yap of ‘Animal’ stands taught and edgily proud in a solid set.

Speaking of taught, it seems Graham’s in need of some release. Tonight’s theme is one of schoolboy sentiment complete with theatrical air guitar and fantasies of kisses behind the bike shed.

He’s probably the most unassuming guy in the place but beneath the famed specs the eyes bulge and the neck veins throb as the awkwardly endearing charm is replaced by frenzied, writhing punk contempt. The blistering ‘You and I’ lifts off and never looks back, ’You always let me down’ pulses with the venom of a teen tantrum and ’Spectacular’ sees him strike out and rifle off a hefty, freewheeling solo. Delivered with breakneck, wired, neuroticism it sees Coxon back at his uncomplicated best. The tender ‘Bittersweet Bundle of Misery’ hints at the meek monotones of his Blur days but for the most part he shows his full repertoire; from the three chord fury to the sprawling blues ridden screamers. He really is standing on his own again.
