This Detroit-based band of brothers (well, not exactly, but hey!) looked set to stun the audience with their rock n roll take on Americana, complete with powerful vocals (especially from backing vocalist Masha Marjieh, who frankly kicks ass), hooks and riffs galore, and cheekbones you could slice a leg of lamb with. And, erm, they did just that.
They looked the part, (i.e. effortlessly cool) and they sounded even better - throwing out tracks from their latest release "Starving Winter Report", and some older hits for the more long-standing fans. Sounding very much like the early Rolling Stones (never a band thing), with the obligatory Hank Williams, Johnny Cash (take a moment here to genuflect), and Gram Parsons influences creeping in there, they had the entire venue captivated throughout their set. Of note, this W&H writer has a slight crush on vocalist Kurt Marschke so it was a nice opportunity to see them play in such an intimate setting (i.e close up, and without being considered a stalker for staring intently at my object of affection).

Did I mention that Masha Marjieh kicks ass? Its always ace when one is confronted with a genuinely rockin/tambourine playing/hard nosed musician. The DEADSTRING BROTHERS are the real deal. Ahhhh takes me back to the good old days (pre-Sandi Thom ["I wish I was a Punk Rocker with Flour (two eggs, castor sugar, baking powder...) in my Hair"...]) when you didn't have to be on a T-Mobile advert to be considered as 'Roots' music. However one digresses...
Deadstring Brothers. They're very good indeed. Go see.
