There’s a lot to be said for big, dumb, unadulterated pop music.
Consequently, there’s a lot to be said for THE PIPETTES. A hugely derivative 60’s obsessed all-girl group hardly sounds like a record company’s wet dream, but herein lies part of the girls’ charm. They’re gloriously out of sync with fashion and trends, and, crucially, don’t seem to give a damn about being cool.
What really matters, though, is the songs. Without them, a
pop group is nothing. On the whole, they have enough tunes to ensure that the period schtick doesn’t become a novelty. The likes of ’Pull Shapes’ and ’Your Kisses Are Wasted’ are pure, joyful romps with killer choruses.

It’s on the slower songs that they fall somewhat short, and the sugary sweetness begins to pall towards the end. Mercifully, though, it’s completely irony-free (the last thing we need is a doo-wop Darkness) and also wonderfully care-free. With indie taking over the world, pop music needs a shot in the arm at the moment. The Pipettes seem happy to oblige.
