Review: 'LITTLE MAN TATE'
'Birmingham, Academy 2, 18th August 2006'

-  Genre: 'Indie'

Our Rating:
With a slew of budding indie heroes vying for the charts at the moment, a band needs something special to stand out. Little Man Tate have that something- namely an ability to write impossible catchy, life-affirming pop gems. It should see them go damn far, if there’s any justice in this world.

The atmosphere in the venue is incredible. It’s very rare that a band about to release only their third single inspires this much devotion and hysteria, and it’s a sight to behold. It feels special, as the rabid crowd yells back one classic chorus after another- surely these songs will become standards in the not-too-distant future.

OK, they’re hardly reinventing the wheel, with the influences there for all to see (The Buzzcocks, The Rakes, Maximo Park), but when the tunes are this good, you’d be a bloody fool to argue. New single ’House Party At Boothy’s’ is possibly their best yet, a joyous, beery anthem, with a hook the milkman will be whistling for years to come. It’s a copper-bottomed hit, better than 99% of the tat that constitutes the Radio One play list. And the brilliant thing is- it’s the tip of the iceberg! There’s loads more where that came from.

On the weekend X Factor begins another interminable run on telly, Little Man Tate conquer Birmingham with their brand of genuine pop power. That’s another ticked off the list, so where next?
