Our Rating:

Half-finished, or unfinished, lightweight lo-fi indie-pop, casio-led and chiming along comes the second I WAS A CUB SCOUT single on Abeano. ‘I Hate Nightclubs’ follows on from the Lamaq-playlisted ‘Pink Squares’, a direct continuation of the electronica-fuelled modern take on that early 1990’s Sarah records-type sound.

Both tracks hammer along with some energy, the subsonic A side distorting gently amidst a paint-thinner casio pulse and DIY vocal assault tactics. Chiming teenage stare-outs and self-conscious fear of abandon are documented in the understated power and subtle synth driven harmonies.

Oh! What A Fiasco’ is a relentless reverse side, the rounded repetition of the vow-owels closing in to envelop the cymbal crashing bleep-fuelled stomp. Precise drum fills signal the sonic warp, before the guitars add to the disorientation. It’s a strange overall sound, thrashing and urgent, yet exposed and fragile due to the ‘nakedness’ of the production.

A few plays revealed an uncanny ability for both sides to grow on you.
