Review: 'ERASURE'
'SOLSBURY HILL'

-  Label: 'MUTE'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'JANUARY 2003'

Our Rating:
From their "Other People's Songs" debacle, "Solsbury Hill" finds ERASURE covering an early, cult-y (and great) Peter Gabriel song and the only thing that springs to this reviewer's mind is Duran Duran's dreadful "Thank You" album where the Durannies gauchely paid tribute to their (choke) "influences."

To be merciful, this ain't quite as Godawful as I imagined, with Vince Clarke allowing the folky melody of the original to at least seep through this farly predictable motorik disco plod and Andy Bell dropping his usual camp warble for a nasal whine that's actually remarkably close to Gabriel's original vocal.

Equally predictably, though, that's pretty much where the post-New Year bonhomie wears thin, as the lengthier 37B mix adds little to the plot and the suitably annoying take of "Ave Maria" (yes, THAT one, unfortunately) only scores on the boiling blood-o-meter.

Not as horrible as I'd imagined, admittedly, though why ERASURE should really want to cover a Peter Gabriel song with lead boots on is anyone's guess. Personally, I feel they should have knocked it one the head after running a smash and grab thru Abba's far more appropriate back catalogue.
