Our Rating:
There are certain things you might associate with being in labour - such as; pain, pain, drugs, babies, discomfort, a happy ending and more excruciating pain. One thing not regularly experienced is a sudden realisation that while screaming your lungs out, you actually have impressive vocal power and might try your hand at a singing career. Emily Grogan did just this, involved with music since the age of 5. A classically trained pianist, she got tired of playing covers of Bach, Beethoven and Chopin and wanted to try singing about her own feelings and experiences instead.

After working at punk rock The Rat, (and the labour realisation) she picked up an electric guitar (which is now her weapon of choice) and wrote her first album.

‘At Sea’ is Boston based Emily’s 3rd album, most comparable to the likes of Alanis Morisette, Joni Mitchell and LeAnne Rimes . A radio friendly, mix of ballads, pop and bluegrass.

Opener ‘End of the Line’ and R/evolution and are pacy numbers, with fast moving guitar work and country and western twangs. The rock aspect that is mentioned as a source of inspiration for Emily, is a not overtly evident but can be glimpsed in ‘Psychedelia’ and ‘Makin’ Room For A New Day’

It is evident from the sheer number of ballads that this is the style Grogan is most at comfort with. Timeless songs like ‘Time Is Waiting’ and ‘Walls and Windows’ are full of emotive lines and show the exquisite beauty of Emily’s voice. The talent is undeniable and if you are into this type of music you will not be disappointed with this third outing.
