Review: 'CSS'
'Brighton, Concorde 2'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
There is a strange contradiction in the revered chant of the audience to the opening number, ‘CSS Suxx’. The atmosphere would undoubtedly be rather less buoyant were the title to be taken literally. and it is soon evident that nothing could be further from the truth.

Vocalist Lovefoxx, resplendent in a tight purple catsuit, is not afraid to mix with the average punter. Attempting to break down the barriers between audience and act, she dives into the front row, taking her life into her hands, whilst the front row take Lovefoxx into theirs.

"This is our R 'n' B song,” declares Lovefoxxx, as the sextet delve into the wonderfully titled 'Music is my hot, hot sex', an ode to their profession. What a joy to be so enthused by one's profession; many is the time this writer has found a similar satisfaction in cleaning toilet seats for the over 65's.

Aside from making great music to dance to, there is a deft intelligence to the Sao Paulo outfit's material. The tongue-in-cheek nature of their lyrics are evident with ‘Art Bitch’, the tongue in cheek sneer at readers of fashion magazines "Lick, lick, lick my art tit/ Suck, suck, suck my art hole" Pretentious, yet catchy. ‘Meeting Paris Hilton’ is another venom-fuelled attack, however, the song is bubbling with eroticism. Paris, ‘the bitch’ is 'so hot', and as much a target of desire as of scorn.

CSS cannot fail to impress with the sheer quality of material at their disposal. ‘Off the hook’, a term coined by the impossibly cool Maxwell Ward of Big Brother 6 fame, hits all the right spots; The Kraftwerk infused- ‘Fuck off…’ is joyously dark. Even the cod- reggae stomp of ‘Alcohol’ is a prime slice of cod. Playful and slightly cheesy, with added harmonica from multi- instrumentalist Adriano Cintra, you can’t help but enjoy it.

CSS show how catchy pop should be- vibrant, bright and fun. And in a purple catsuit. Sublime.
