Being invited to tour with Franz Ferdinand is not an everyday occurrence for developing bands, but The Servant clearly impressed their Glaswegian colleagues, and from the comments on their MySpace, the French audience that they played to. ‘How To Destroy A Relationship’ is a collage of tense, melodic indie with a memorable emotional edge. The band’s lyricism is also not to be sniffed at, “My walkman plays in this rain-whipped train”, croons singer Dan Black over breezy guitarwork on the mellow, ‘Hey Lou Reed’.
Elsewhere the wandering guitarwork and plaintive cries recall the good days of The Verve, especially in the epic crescendo of, ‘Save Me Now’. It’s easy to see what attracted massive record sales for the band’s last album; their sound is a stellar British indie trip with plenty of intelligence. There are sing a-long choruses a plenty and the tunes are so catchy that you can imagine live crowds being enthralled by the laidback rock vibe. ‘I Wish I Could Stop Wishing For Things’ could definitely fall into this infectious category with a sly, insistent chorus that will slip into your memory with haunting guitar dissonance and vocal cries.

Guitar slides and plenty of lots of resonating fretwork add an urgency and solid rock core to the album, ‘Brains’ for example features a cocky psychedelic 70’s riff with falsetto vocals and sharp cymbal beats to match; it’s a step back in time for sure but it sounds smooth and sincere enough for the group to be genuine veterans of the era. ‘Hey Do You Feel Good?’ continues the relaxed feel with a soaring chorus of, “Do you feel good? Do you feel fine most of the time?” it’s a lovely chilled tune that will truly make you smile.
A mix of trippy indie melodies and heated guitar rock, ‘How To Destroy A Relationship’ is a top quality album with something for everyone!
