Review: 'POLLOCK, EMMA'
'ACID TEST'

-  Label: '4AD (www.4ad.com)'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '17th September 2007'

Our Rating:
Having spent a decade with previous Mercury Music Prize nominees The Delgados, Emma Pollock is now securing herself as a fully-fledged and beguiling solo artist, as she now offers us the delightful ‘Acid Test’, her follow-up single to radio favourite ‘Adrenaline’.

Produced by Victor Van Vugt (PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, The Triffids), the track is immediate and captivating as soon as it begins, with quiet, soulful electric guitars that burst into life during the chorus and a thumping, deep bassline, which constantly keeps the rhythm supple. Everything seems to flow perfectly, with the chorus harmonies gushing and surging around the rest of the instruments, creating a fantastic song.

‘Acid Test’ is a hotchpotch of many different subject matters, as Emma herself, admits: “I tend to make a patchwork quilt of lyrics in songs...the first line of “Acid Test” (This house does not feel like a home/is it occupied?) – That stemmed from the fall-out of The Delgados. I felt a loss of commitment...and couldn’t get motivated because my head was too full”.

The song also describes a daydream she used to have as a girl, when she would imagine herself with someone who she liked at the time in a wide open space. With two top-notch singles under her belt, and vocal similarities to the likes of PJ Harvey and Charlotte Hatherley, things are looking bright for Emma Pollock.

(Acid Test is now on general sale, and Emma Pollock’s debut album, ‘Watch The Fireworks’, is released on September 17th.)
