Review: 'Melvin G. Fromm Jr.'
'Fromm's Country Music Volume 1'

-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: 'Out Now'

Our Rating:
The magnificently named Melvin G. Fromm Jr. has been writing and performing country music for around 8 years, and since 2002 his music has received radio play in 56 countries. This collection contains 20 of his recent recordings.

I must start this review by saying that, I'm not much of a fan of traditional country music. Being British, I find it does not resonant because we do not have the same history and tradition to put it in context. We have folk but it's a slightly different beast.

That said, Fromm's music is quite easy on the ear. It could be described as "pop-country" in that for the most part, the songs are short, breezy and often rather catchy, while being firmly country in sound. A highlight is "What We Have", which has a particularly jaunty piano running through it.

A change of pace is offered by a couple of country ballads (for this reviewer at least they are not as successful as the "pop" songs), and a pair of songs with a female vocal.

I honestly cannot decide whether I like this a lot or feel ambivalent towards it. Fromm's simple, often heartfelt songs do have something about them which makes them very hard to dislike, but at the same time you might need to be a fan of country music to fully appreciate his work.

I would sugges that it is worth investigating if you think you feel the urge to try some "proper" country music but are new to the genre.
