Review: 'NEW PORNOGRAPHERS, THE'
'Myriad Harbour'

-  Label: 'Matador'
-  Genre: 'Post-Rock' -  Release Date: '1st October 2007'-  Catalogue No: '7"/download'

Our Rating:

More epic pop from Vancouver tunesmiths THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS, who offer a first taste of their latest batch of work with this release.

‘Myriad Harbour’ is the first single to be taken from their upcoming fourth studio album ‘Challengers’, which promises an even bigger sound, though the epic nature of the track comes with rather less jaunty relentlessness, or Prozac joy if you will.

Is this a significant shift in focus for the Canadian collective? There are less synthesisers bleeping, that much is for sure. ‘Myriad Harbour’ is strummed on a lazy acoustic, though the vocals echo and reverberate alongside the sleepy roll of the drums as castanets click along here and there.

The jam intensifies as the looping build-up/drop-out pattern repeats itself and the overall sound seems like it’s custom made for daydreaming, with the bouncing bass sound of reverse side ‘Fugue State’ providing strong echoes of the band’s established sound.

It’s a case of job done, as the single stirs up the required amount of intrigue, leaving me interested in the rest of the album’s contents. This despite the safe approach of a band that are still operating well within the parameters they’ve marked out as their territory.
