Review: 'GORGEOUS COLOURS, THE'
'HOLY MOLEY (Download only)'

-  Label: 'www.myspace.com/thegorgeouscolours'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '28th September 2007'

Our Rating:
Dublin's hugely-promising GORGEOUS COLOURS pricked this writer's ears up in no uncertain terms with their previous single 'Hunting Something': a charged, baroque-pop masterpiece with an interest in looking way beyond the constraints of what normally passes as acceptable in traditional indie guitar circles.

Wonderfully, its' download-only follow-up 'Holy Moley' more than satisfies too. Although an animal of a very different stripe compared with its' flamboyant, diablo-fuelled predecessor, it's every bit as stuffed with presence and verve, propelled along by stop-start syncopation, bitten-off Fall-style guitars and topped off with another of Geoffrey McArdle's best, darkly charismatic vocals. The fact they appear to have roped in what sounds like a chapter of Gregorian monks for some backing vocal flavour hardly hurts either.

Once again, 'Holy Moley' is potently, discernibly different and a good few metres better than most of the competition, so when Geoff (possibly with a murderous glint in his eye) sings "come follow me down the garden path" you're more than inclined to follow, regardless of the outcome.

The marvellous thing with The Gorgeous Colours is that you never really know where their intoxicating music is going to take you next, yet you instinctively feel you can trust them to guide you. It's clearly going to be a fascinating journey, but for now 'Holy Moley' is the sound of the plot thickening very nicely indeed.
