This is an impressive debut from London's earnest new-wavers GOD LOVE YOU FOR A LIAR.
The title track is thumping and dramatic, with alternate elements operating both at the forefront and from deep within the mix, and so it proves for all four tracks on this EP
‘Love Like We’re Lovers’ is bass-led and dripping with sensuality long before the discordant guitar weaves and staccato-slams and the song is reduced to fragments. Keyboards aid the fanfare along with some odd progressive, rock-falsetto vocal FX and tiny bits of synthesised noise as the spoken word break murmurs along in the background.
As the obsessive overload of ‘The Hunger’ threatens to spiral out of control, the tune fair simmers as the lid is kept on this mashed out blend of lo-fi noise. Skidding in and out of focus, the song breathes heavily in step with the quickening pulse: you feel the fear and the urgency as adrenaline flows and the self-preservation instinct kicks in.

The sound of the sea provides a backdrop to the tense string arranged drama of ‘London, You Owe Me This Much’, a ballad with more odd harmonics adding strangeness to the lonely-in-a-crowd sentiments. The vocal harmonies edge their way towards a falsetto peak and the spot is hit before it all comes full circle. Neurotic and very on-edge, this is a driven and determined release from a dark lot with some strange ideas, but the tension makes the songs work effectively, recreating the dramas of everyday life in shimmering stereo. I liked it on first listen.
