Our Rating:
Wake Up Sunshine is the debut demo release from Liverpool-born, Manchester-based Phil Dobie, AKA SEVENNIL PHIL, who is currently in the process of putting together a band for live performances.

Phil’s back-to-basics approach is there for all to hear as, with heart worn on his sleeve, these songs unfold unswerving, and drenched in understated, yet appealing melodies.

Dampened-down acoustic guitar, and gently rolling percussion make up the basis of ‘Wake Up Sunshine’, a song that celebrates the individual, and ‘yeahs’ along its positive message – namely, total belief in the self. Broken hearts give way to brighter futures as hope’s helping hand is extended via this easy-riding, downbeat assurance that where love is concerned, there’s someone for everyone.

Also featured are the slow-stomping ‘Cut From The Same Cloth’, a tale of struggles dominated by lead guitar licks and a four-to-the-floor beat, and the off-beat strumming + narrative ‘Get Over It’ which marks out time as the great healer against a well-captured backdrop of spring rain.

A veteran of a succession of ‘average’ bands, this demo demonstrates Phil’s definite talent as a songwriter, and offers considerable hope for the artist’s own bright future in music.
