This download-only single is taken from SIMON BREED’S debut album, ‘The Smitten King Laments’, which is scheduled for release on 4th February 2008.
Concerned with the horrors of commuting, the book is an escape from the daily grind of the rat-race, and therefore finishing it is a dreaded thing indeed. As time passes, we are reminded of the passing of time - though the fixed stare sees the lines and the pages, it’s looking through them as anxiety levels escalate wildly.
Breed’s fingerpicking guitar style gathers momentum as his deep baritone explores the psychological pitfalls of day-to-day train or tube journeys. Rhythmically, this echoes the sound of the tracks and seems hell-bent intent on grinding out all of the associated stresses, though there are several breaks where the sound is injected with life upbeat and consuming.

It’s an accessible release, throwaway, yet full of passion. Breed plays to his undoubted vocal strengths, and though the listener doesn’t have to work too hard there is plenty to identify with here.
