Review: 'LAZY DARLINGS, THE'
'Life Is Easy/A Girl Like You'

-  Label: 'www.myspace.com/lazydarlings'
-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
The Lazy Darlings are currently a loose collaboration of musicians from in and around the Leeds area. They met only 2 days before they wrote and recorded these songs, but their brief meeting has certainly borne fruit.

First track “Life Is Easy” starts as a mid-paced alt-country tinged number with touches of Hammond organ and lap steel guitar. When the rousing male-female vocal of the chorus comes in it is transformed into a catchy, upbeat pop song.

Most impressively, the song keeps building as it goes along, with each verse more richly textured than the last, as more instruments are layered into the mix. “That” chorus punctuates at regular intervals and really begins to stick in the mind. It’s the kind of song you think you’ve heard before, which in this case means it has a timeless quality rather than it sounds like they're copying someone else.

Second track “A Girl Like You” has a slower, more reflective tone and while retaining the alt-country tinge of the previous track, also has a 60s pop flavour. There are hints of the Beach Boys, and the recurring “I don’t know why” vocal refrain sounds like The Kinks would if they’d have been hippies. It is another strong song.

I really rather like this. While it is easy to detect the influence of other bands (whether intentional or unintentional), this music sounds equally “now”. This is difficult to achieve and the fact that The Lazy Darlings have done it on their first recordings bodes well for the future.
