Our Rating:

Comic book maker and sub-pop rock n' roller JEFFREY LEWIS follows his ’12 Crass Songs’ album release with his brilliant version of the punk band’s ‘End Result’

Tapping reverb and garage-flowering psychedelia slows the song to a near-standstill, highlighting the poetry of the lyrics, filtering out the anger like Prozac in a strangely detached way. Built around a fingerpicked acoustic guitar lick, the cover is both compelling and absorbing, a complete reworking of the original that plays to a different set of strengths.

Punk was chiefly characterised by the ability to take the piss out of itself, and Lewis plays to this marvellously whilst also highlighting the intelligence that was another key feature of punk rock. You have to hear it to believe it, but this is a record with solid and strange appeal
