Review: 'APPLICANTS'
'Hypochondriac/Hurt'

-  Label: 'Brainlove'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '29th Oct 2007'-  Catalogue No: 'www.brainloverecords.com'

Our Rating:
One of three Brainlove releases that came out on the same day, this single from APPLICANTS is a sure-sounding hit of truly surreal proportions.

A-side ‘Hypochondriac’ is off to a flier on the back of a grinding funk stomp before settling quickly into a rockabilly groove, dispensing honking tales of FX-spiced Temazepam abuse and victim mentality sub-weirdness like an apathetic pharmacist wrong ‘un destined for Hell’s kitchen.

The lo-fi shift of ‘Hurt’ jangles to a halt, resurrected as a wall of sound that screams impressively from the rafters like something off ‘Band On The Run’. It’s a tantrum in slo-mo, and the bottom lip is gloriously stuck out before the screech of static and feedback finally drowns everything in a frequency-altering fit of self-destruction. Brilliant!
