Review: 'LEVELLERS, THE'
'A LIFE LESS ORDINARY'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'March 2008'

Our Rating:
There's something reassuring about The Levellers continued presence upon the music scene. Everyone knows someone who likes The Levellers – mainly hippies and history teachers granted, but there is a certain fondness reserved for this travelling band of musicians

“A Life Less Ordinary” is a lively Levellers song – an upbeat tune for the grimiest barn dance in down. It's a dramatic number and very much an ensemble affair – it's not dull and it's not really being done elsewhere at the moment. With references to smoking on the dancefloor, it's a bit out of date for these post-smoking ban times, but you have to appreciate the sentiment. It's what you could call a good Levellers.

“The Cholera Well” tackles recent history –a nice dash of anti-US sentiment put to a catchy tune. At first it did seem to sound pretty appalling, but if Bright Eyes had done it I probably would have been singing it's praises. The Levellers should be commended for still wanting to make a statement without making it sound forced. Extra respect for believing in what they're doing. With “down, down to the cholera well,” repeated several times, this has a chorus you could easily be singing in public without thinking about what you're saying.

It's not a bad song, at all, actually. Much better than a new Levellers release should be at this stage in their career. Surprisingly enjoyable and definitely worth giving a few minutes of your time to.
