CAMERON SMITH was born in Canada but has lived and performed in the UK for more than a decade. Geography is his third album, but the first to be commercially available.
Smith cut his musical teeth writing scores for musical theatre and this influence definitely shows through in the songs on this album. There is an overall style here that consists of piano-led melodies, enhanced with a string-section which touches on classical music. On top of this, Smith’s vocals are delivered in a way that lends the songs what can really only be described as show-tunes style but without the overblown pomposity of a Lloyd-Webber musical.
Smith is a talented pianist but his music is probably not quite pop enough to appeal to the masses and is not really to the taste of this reviewer. However, it is deserving of an extra half mark for providing a different take on the pop-orientated singer-songwriter-performer.
