New York: the city that "never sleeps" apparently. Full of excitement, emotion and energy, New York is all about feeling your pulse race in a bustly metropolis. It's just a bit unfortunate that The Hazey Janes' similarly-titled new single rather fails to evoke any of these emotions.
"New York", the first single from their upcoming second album, is pleasant, but very little more. Moving away from the country-infected music of their past, the song finds them
in more jangly, indie-pop territory. Sounding like "Is This It"-era Strokes but with the sharp edges wrapped in cotton wool, the band deliver a tune that is likely to delight listeners looking for that summer feel-good vibe. It has the feel of a track written with the express intention of taking the band into the mainstream; it's catchy, has a chorus that you can sing along to and isn't too long. Radio friendly, it certainly is.

At the same time, however, it feels over-produced, completely devoid of any rough edges and is also just the right length to render it a little inconsequential. That's not to suggest that the Janes were ever a particularly 'rough and ready' band, but at least tracks such as "Fire In The Sky" from their debut album, "Hotel Radio", displayed a little more character.
All in all, "New York" is a track that unfortunately leaves the listener yearning for just a bit more bite, a bit more adventure and a bit more excitement.
