Review: 'D4, THE'
'LADIES MAN'

-  Label: 'INFECTIOUS'
-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '17/3/03'-  Catalogue No: 'INFEC 122CDS'

Our Rating:
'Sleep' is obviously not a word that features in THE D4'S devil's lexicon, as this - the fourth single to be ripped, bleeding from their "6Twenty" album - accompanies yet another extensive trek around the UK and Europe.

"Ladies Man" of course, was always one of the album's major highlights, and it ain't lost its' sleazy, back alley touch on re-introduction now. Velocity-wise, it's a little slower than their regular sonic blizzard, but no less effective for that, instead presenting a snottily infectious strut that never fails to remind this writer of "Nuggets"-era garage heroes The Shadows Of Knight. I still think organist Cameron Rowe (featured on this track) is a brave man to take on this session. Did he get danger money? Perhaps he should think himself lucky he didn't get garbed up in the fetching fishnets the band are sporting in the promo...

Anyway, the two B-sides will be a delight for anyone who caught THE D4'S insanely supercharged pre-Xmas jaunts, as they are live'n'absolutely ripping surges through certified faves "Invader Ace" and "Outta Blues" from a feverish Manchester show at the arse end of November.

If we're getting down to brass tacks, it would be nice to think our NZ heroes will stop their runaway transit for long enough to go back into the studio, as "Ladies Man" is (surely?) the last obvious single to be lifted from "6Twenty" and some fresh material would be welcome at this stage. Nonetheless, these three tracks will keep us bopping like lobotomised lemmings until then.
