Review: 'Farchild'
'Chivalry Has Died'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '2008'

Our Rating:
Jane Collymore is the one-woman band Farchild (http://www.farchildmusic.com), who operates from the same isolated base of creativity as Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor. As with many female artists who explore the dark underbelly of electronic music, there is a certain amount of leather-clad sensuality here.

In Farchild's case, though, it is balanced with a healthy feminist perspective. "Ey, Papi" is a slap in the face to any boozed-up octopus of the male persuasion, the ones who put their tentacles in the wrong places. This is not some bitchy rant but a call to be treated like a human being - or else. I like it a lot, especially its deceptively alluring slow-hand groove.

Farchild invests much more depth in this genre than her peers. Generally this kind of music is pretty shallow, focusing more on style and attitude than lyrical substance. "Quo" attacks the complacency and selfish indifference in modern society with the streetwise punch of Public Enemy: "Contraception, mass deception, government: 'We'll all keep 'em guessin''/All until riots ensue." For all of her otherworldly synthesizers, Farchild's lyrics are mostly down-to-Earth and very powerful.

By giving synth-rock a socio-political kick in the balls, Farchild is entering uncharted territory that is indeed thrilling and enlightening.
