Review: 'LEE, GUY'
'THE HURRICANE WALTZ'

-  Label: 'Guytar (self released)'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '2008'

Our Rating:
As a consumer rather than a practioner, I wouldn't begin to criticise the technical guitar skills of Guy Lee.

After all, he is a successful teacher, has written four ‘how to play’ books and numerous articles in magazines like Vintage Guitar, Premier Guitar and 20th Century Guitar.

Let's just take it as read that the man knows his stuff.

That said, it’s hard not to view this instrumental album as anything more than a calling card - a means of getting more students or getting signed up to play at some local event (local being California).

There are some nice flourishes from violinist Derek Pell and also some bass, drum, piano backing but as stand alone vocal-less tracks they don't really work.

Lee includes Chet Atkins, George Harrison and Johnny Winter among his influences and the mood on this album is predominantly jazzy ,bluesy or laid back soft rock.

There may be heart but there's no soul and the playing is not compelling enough to hold the attention for the sixteen tracks and the one hour plus playing time.
