Review: 'GERESTI'
'Keys into the 70's'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '2004'

Our Rating:
Pianist Bob Geresti (http://cdbaby.com/cd/geresti22) is probably keenly aware of how good he is.

When his rendition of Paul McCartney's sap fest "My Love" segues into John Lennon's grand masterpiece of utopian coexistence "Imagine," it is executed to perfection. It startled me upon first impact: Did I really hear that? Geresti's mastery of the piano is clearly evidenced there but that's only a small sample of the excellence on this disc.

As you can probably guess from its title, "Keys into the 70's" are Geresti's piano reworkings of undying hits from that era. One track, the Moody Blues' "Nights in White Satin," was actually released earlier, in 1967; however, to Geresti's credit the tune didn't become a smash stateside until the early '70s. Geresti's tastes in covers here also reflects the musical diversity on the charts at the time, everything from the soulful yearning of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly" to the world-weary country balladry of the Eagles' "Desperado" to the widescreen heavy metal of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven." Each of them are faithfully and lovingly adapted to piano.
