Ooh – I’ve never heard of lisp-rock before. On ‘Abstract’ – the debut single from London’s Lo-fi Culture Scene – the lyrics are delivered with a spray that live must stretch out into the fourth or fifth rows. ‘Abstract’ is somewhere between Los Campesinos and Good Shoes, but better than that.
It pisses over most of the indie released this year. This is made all the more remarkable by the fact that the band are all either fourteen years old or younger. They’ve learned the indie formula and they’ve got their own sound in there. They lack the tweeness of Cajun Dance Party, and the sheer blandness of The Kooks. It’s not that sort of indie. It’s promising indie.

It’s all very charming. B-side ‘Fast Forward’ shows that they have more than one idea to work on, and although they don’t stray too far from the indie formula, they have time on their sides. We can forgive them the odd ‘Woah-oh-oh-oh-oh.’ It’s almost sweeping at times, and the kick the collective overhyped arse of Glasvegas without any doubt.
The question is, will Jacob Wheldon’s vocals still sound like JJ72 when his voice breaks?
