Life has a way of ensuring you're reminded of your mistakes, hasn't it? Recently, your reviewer - during an otherwise fairly positive appraisal of their "We Are Skint" compilation - dared to suggest that Brighton's groundbreaking Skint label may have gone off like a rocket artistically, but appeared to have lost the plot of late.
Well, I think it's time I decided what selection of gravy'n'veg I'd like to accompany the ritual eating of words, because here's the new FC KAHUNA single. It's on Skint, and...er, yeah, it's ace, actually. Oh God, pass the HP...
Personal embarrassment aside, though, "Hayling" is a terrific taster for the forthcoming FC KAHUNA album, "The Machine Says Yes" as it slows down Dan'n'Jon's oeuvre considerably and presents a luscious, swirly (whisper it..) trip-hoppy soundscape that's ultra slooowww and sensual, with plenty of room for ex-GUS GUS vocalist Haftis Huld to weave her truly bewitching aural spells.
Dan recently admitted to me that FC had spent a long time on their new tracks so "they'd be a big listener experience" and, boy, does that approach pay dividends here. This is one huge, floaty beauty of a track. A a bonus, there's also a natty array of remixes, though perhaps inevitably - the Super Furry Animals one scoops the prize. Their reworking is utterly mental taking in vocoders, doo-wop, 12-bar blues and controlled explosions. Providing you don't mind leaving your mind at the left luggage for a while you're in clover.

This is purely a bonus, however, as "Hayling" is as fine a re-emerging as FC KAHUNA could have hoped for with their new label. As Haftis so seductively puts it: "Don't think about all those things you feel, just be glad to be here."
For once, nothing more really needs to be said.
