Review: 'NEW EDUCATION'
'TODAY'

-  Label: 'KIDS RECORDINGS (7" vinyl & download)'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '27th October 2008'

Our Rating:
Bearing in mind they're fronted by two brothers (Ryan and Jack Dooley) and express a peference for the bullish, anthemic sounds of Oasis, it probably isn't too hard to put two and two together before you've even heard this first single by Stoke-on-Trent whippersnappers NEW EDUCATION.

And said maths don't exactly make five, either, because 'Today' is indeed fashioned from the reliably granite-hard Britpop sound that would have ensured its' instant Top 5 presence circa 1996. And yes, it's undeniable that Ryan's gruff, lived-in vocal does bear a passing resemblance to Gallagher Jnr, although – consciously or not – he seems to be cultivating a likeable world-weariness which may help set him apart as his confidence grows.

B-side is the cunningly-titled 'New Education': a tad on the anaemic side, but with Ryan again    seemingly carrying an old head on young shoulders vocally (“I admit I'm not perfect/ I've messed up and I've paid for it” is hardly the kind of admission Oasis would have let slip in public early on, now is it?) they get away with it. For now at least.

New Education, then, hardly present us with a course of rock'n'roll learning that will require diligence and homework. For all that, they're not devoid of presence, and may yet go on to wear these tried'n'tested primary rock colours with pride. Let's not write them off yet.
