Review: 'IT HUGS BACK'
'Work Day/Take A Part 7"'

-  Label: '4AD (www.4ad.com)'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '6th October 2008'

Our Rating:

The major-label production job done on this summery pop haze means that there’s less trace of ‘owt ‘Lo-Fi’ about it, but the Kent indie outfit’s latest offering traipses credibly enough, albeit along a well-worn path.

In true stoner style, the chorus is signalled by the musical equivalent of a slight raise or nod of the head (though in actual fact, the core of the track is some way busier than this dawdling veneer would have you believe). That the two altered tempos co-exist is proof that there’s at least some depth to the finished article, but for every soul who is drawn in by the frisson of dreamy allure, there’s another who’ll be phased, crazed or simply bypassed by this pedestrian slice of the summertime.

For me, it’s inoffensive. Sadly, it’s also unchallenging. The B-side is forgettably dull and murky (and I guess as such, will add to the relative charm of the lead track)
