Our Rating:
These sorts of referential piss-take songs are hard to do well, with most of the witticisms from the lyricists seeming trite after a few listens. Pause.Break.Riot’s take on nostalgia definitely has something about it. Taking a rather retro techno-ish sound and some Shamen-esque chanting, ‘Retro’ is a song about loving the early nineties too much, whilst sounding like something very much from that era.

Perhaps this song works for me because I agree with the sentiment; there’s something very tired about conversations involving nostalgia. It’s something worth parodying, and for that this song raises several smiles. ‘Let’s bring back the Crystal Maze,’ pretty much sums up the nature of these conversations. The observations strike a chord, which makes it hard to dislike.

It’s not a song that will withstand many listens – it’s too outright funny to endure. I’d be interested to hear what else this band have up their sleeves, for I hope there are more strings to their bow than mere pastiche. But this is entertaining enough to leave me interested in hearing more.

This band is very entertaining live and have several more catchy tunes in their bag. One to watch.
