Review: '39STEPS, THE'
'COMING CLEAN'

-  Label: 'Bad Sneakers Records'
-  Genre: 'Trip-Hop' -  Release Date: 'February 2 2009'-  Catalogue No: 'digital download'

Our Rating:
COMING CLEAN is a first single from a debut album scheduled for release in March. THE 39STEPS is the artist name adopted by producer/musician/DJ Kato, while guest vocalist Laura Fowles (already well known as a sax player) luxuriously absorbs the human attention on each of the tracks we've had chance to hear so far.

I would go along with "dark soul" as a good indication of what the single has to offer. There's a gentle trip-hop feel, a deep narcotic beat and plenty of echoey, bleepy embellishment teasing out the strands of smoky ambient mood.

Laura Fowles sings a dreamy, assured vocal with deft jazz colouring.

It's the sort of track that will get a lot of plays in darkening rooms a long way beyond midnight. By the time people have come to appreciate its outstanding quality and surreptitiously note its title and provenance, the album should be looking like a very secure emotional investment.
