For all the technology and advancement that we enjoy day after day, there’s nothing wrong with harking back to a simpler time. Reminding us of times past is this EP from Lovvers, who are revisiting the space between garage and punk rock quite admirably. This is a collection of seven short proclamations screaming at you to stop scratching your beard and to just have a fucking good time.
They’re not an incredible band, but they can put together some good tunes. ‘The Kids (Laugh Out Loud)’ is a short, sweet and snarling rock tune. Shouty, chaotic and just a little bit glam, it’s come straight from a gig that you were too young to be at. ‘Teenage Shutdown’ is robust and simple, with aggressive riffs and spittle-charged vocals – it falls somewhere between the Sex Pistols and The Von Bondies. There is more than a little Strummer in the spirit of this song.
It’s brainless in a good way – songs you can leap about to and let off some steam. They sound full of protest and rebellion, in a way that should seem staged, but in this case it’s believable. ‘No Fun’ is an over the top tight trousered rock moment, complete with large sound and slurred vocals.

The seven songs clock in at twelve minutes and thirty nine seconds, so it’s a breathless affair. The spirit of punk of old is stamped all over the tracks, and more than anything it’s an entertaining set of songs, suggesting a similarly exuberant live experience. It gives an impression of spilt beer, stage diving and split lips. They’re the band Towers of London will never be – classic but authentic. Well worth thirteen minutes of anyone’s time.
