Our Rating:
It's going to be a bit hard to follow Tim Peacock's authoritative review of The Last Shadow Puppets' début album, "The Age Of The Understatement", from which this single, "My Mistakes Were Made For You", is taken. Having not really listened to the album very much (not so much a concious decision as just an acceptance of the fact that there's so much music in the world, and only two ears to devote at any one time), my immediate impressions of the single were: orchestral, Phil Spector-esque pop, with a nod to John Barry and rich, James Bond-like themes. So far, so like exactly what Tim wrote. So, if you've read the album review and didn't agree with it, then you may as well as stop reading. You're not going to find anything going against the grain here.

Having rocketed to stardom on the back of the Monkeys' frenetic, dance-rock, Alex Turner has married his sharp wit and even sharper tongue to a slightly more mature, luxurious sound. If the Monkeys were pints and fights in the local village pub, then "My Mistakes Were Made For You" is sipping champagne in an expensive hotel bar in Manhattan. That's not to say that the subject matter that most preoccupies Turner's young mind is any different: it's still women, and their ever-so-slightly dangerous nature. As muted trumpets and swooning strings paint a background wash, a girl just waiting to dash Turner's dreams glides through the room, snaring him in her trap. As he falls for this femme-fatale, the painful self-awareness that we know so well from his previous work kicks in: "And it's solid as a rock rolling down a hill/The fact is that it probably will hit something/On the hazardous terrain".

Articulate, wide-screen pop, brimming with orchestral flourishes and extravagant instrumentation: having basically repeated what Tim said in his review, I think all that's left to do now is listen to the music.
