Our Rating:
GYRATORY SYSTEM'S debut salvoes on 45 ('Baron's Court Tunnel'/ 'Thermidor') made it plain that their former leader Daniel Patrick Quinn wasn't the only creative catalyst in One More Grain. Both of the tracks were memorable, rhythmic affairs with supple spines. They poked sticks at Indie and Post-rock to see what would come out before leading a merry dance all their own.

Anticipated follow-up 'Yowser Yowser Yowser' is no slouch either. Built upon a bed of dense, droning bass and propelled by Laurie Waller's disco be-bop drums, it's a second mesmerising slab of shifting sound. Before it winds down, Messrs. Blick and Blick have brought a carnival of call and response brass to town, rendering the lack of vocal input utterly irrelevant. The end results are ecstatic, bizarre and fascinating and logical comparisons refreshingly few and far between. OMD's much-derided 'Dazzle Ships' maybe, but not a lot else.

Nominal flip side 'Crooked Bridge' is a little more arcane and further out, although the reins of the plot are still clutched firmly. It's a repetitive dawn chorus and makes me think of a slightly more club-friendly Pere Ubu, although as usual it's dancing down a road less travelled and one signposted by the band themselves. It all adds up to something pretty special and suggests The Gyratory System are becoming an enticing prospect indeed.
