Review: 'MARCH GREENS, THE'
'YOU SHALL GO TO THE BALL (EP)'

-  Label: 'www.myspace.com/themarchgreens'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'April 2009'

Our Rating:
The March Greens should be classed as British Summer Pop. That is, they sound like the fifteenth cloudy day in a row with only the prospect of rain to come at the weekend. ‘You Shall Go To The Ball EP’ is the debut release from the band, and it fails to make an impression with a trilogy of lacklustre twee numbers.

Track 1 ‘Cinders’ is a pleasant if forgettable combination of jangly pop and hangdog vocals, and sounds like Keane on a tighter budget. ‘You Don’t Need It or Deserve It’ is an exercise in dreariness, a prolonged song with the title words reeled off at the speed of a canal barge repeatedly during the chorus. The vocals make you feel a bit weary, whilst there is nothing discerning going on in the background for you to cling onto. ‘Manhattan’ is perhaps the blandest of the collection, drifting around with pursed lipped optimism that kind of brings you down.

I guess it’s pretty straightforward twee pop, the sort you see on any number of stages simultaneously at Glastonbury, but it’s not going to keep you from moving on, searching for something with a little more bite. When there is Tunng in this world, this sort of thing misses the mark considerably.
