Our Rating:
It boldly states on the Blue Roses press release that she is like no other. Having received her first two singles, I’m struggling to draw up any obvious comparisons.

‘Doubtful Comforts’ is the fragile debut single, supported by one of the unsung musical instruments out there, the kalimba (to date, I have only managed a tone deaf version of Radiohead’s ‘No Surprises’ on the way that seems to appear around my house sporadically). It’s haunting, bleak and pretty damn beautiful. Perhaps not something I’m going to listen to repeatedly, but having put it on it was certainly enjoyable.

‘I Am Leaving’ is single number two and leans a little more towards euphoria. There’s something more human about this performance, where the lyrics stand out more and the jaunty acoustic backing takes you away from the sparse landscapes and places her firmly in a world beyond fiction. It sounds a little like The Accidental in a higher pitch, it’s warm and inviting. She has an interesting voice, not particularly weird, but not something you encounter everyday either.

The similarity between these songs is the subtle introduction of more instruments as the songs build up into micro-symphonies. There is a sense of progression throughout both songs, enough going on to move this on from standard singer-songwriting. Plenty of talent to be seen in these first two impressions, and a fair amount of variety, which suggests checking out her debut album will be a fortuitous experience.
