Maxx Green, whose biography is hearteningly light on masturbatory label guff (he's a musician who refuses to talk about his background or any of his influences beyond an all-encompassing "anything!") unveils the poppy face of hedonistic nihilism in the form of "Wasted". With lyrics such as "Let's get wasted/there's nothing better to do" (and that's about as profound as it gets, boys and girls), this is a track to tickle the brain's party-loving right hemisphere. Even the single cover is at it, hiding nothing with its line-up of brightly coloured, bonbon-esque pills of MDMA, just waiting to be popped and absorbed. The song, a lo-fi "anthem" if ever I heard one, throws together an odd mix of dance-lite beat, dream-pop guitars and lyrics to appeal to the Friday night crowd. Two minutes and twelve seconds for the jilted modern youth looking for nothing more than the next tab and a quick drunken fumble at the end of the night.
Having opened with nihilism, Green goes for gushy-eyed arrogance in a paean to that someone special with "We Are The Aces". Glucose-glazed euphoria oozes out of the song's every pore: the bass-heavy artificial drumbeat, the brittle, sugary guitars, the trance-like vibe running throughout the song, and the "heartfelt", self-congratulatory lyrics of touching the stars and the world being "theirs". In fact everything about this feels teeth-squeakingly sweet and dangerously damaging to one's health, like washing a box of dolly mixtures down with a can of Dr. Pepper. And yet you can't help but listen to it. Like everyone's favourite sugar-laden concoction, it may have all the substance of a marshmallow but you'll feel good for it, if only for a fleeting moment. E-numbers and E: what a weekend...
