Review: 'KunK'
'We Are Not Who You Think We Are [Single]'

-  Label: 'Plastic Sun Records'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '18th February 2008'-  Catalogue No: 'PSR1CD'

Our Rating:
Sitting somewhere between the speaker-bothering noise of the late-eighties grunge, the surly attitude of the mid-seventies punk movement, and the immediacy of this new century's alternative rock, KunK (with capital K bookends) do a mean brand of snarly, aggressive noise.

Compared to whatever angry dinosaurs sound like in the press release (where on earth do they get these things from?), I'd be more inclined to go with raw, searing, in-your-face rock. "We Are Not Who You Think We Are" is the most marketable, certainly the most listenable of the three tracks on offer, which is fortunate considering it's their single. It's energised and decent enough. "Public Image Ltd" sounds like a sneer mounted on angry guitars, a supposed critique of today's cultural movements: "I'm gonna start wearing black/and listen to death metal/I'm gonna get some attention/I'm gonna worship the devil".

It's jeering, sarcastic but not particularly original. Pouring scorn on modern-day British "sub-cultures" (skinheads, goths, skate-punks... yawn) for being conformist and fake is hardly novel. At least it's delivered with a bit of passion and buckets of spite though. I imagine they make for a pretty intense live act. Perhaps worth keeping an eye on...
