Review: 'CAPITOL YEARS, THE'
'You Can Stay There'

-  Label: 'SOE Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '6th July (Download) / 13th July (7” & CD)'-  Catalogue No: 'SOE Records 002'

Our Rating:
The Capitol Years’ ‘Revolution’ single went down a storm here on Whisperin’ and Hollerin,’ and this, the follow up is also worthy of our praise.

The band’s lead singer, songwriter and producer, the memorably-monikered Shai, Son of Eli, says that ‘You Can Stay There’ was an attempt to write his own ‘Needle in he Camel’s Eye.’ The influence of this song, and indeed the whole of Eno’s ‘Here Come the Warm Jets’ album isn’t confined only to the melody, but suffused into the feel of the song, in its production and its classic yet quirky pop sensibility.

The song is solidly rhythmic without being in your face about it, the jangling guitar weaving a fine melodic tapestry over which Shai lays over his breezy melodic vocals which swoop and soar. This really is the sound of summer.

The flipside (yes, it’s released as a limited 7” as well as on CD), is a slightly slower number with a gritty guitar beefing out the bottom end beneath the picked lead guitar. Again, Shai’s vocals are light and airy and evocatively melodic and serve to lift the song to another level. Unpretentious but well-crafted, intelligent pop of this calibre is a rare thing, and I for one am looking forward to the forthcoming album.
