Review: 'HREDA'
'Minnows / Dead Horses'

-  Label: 'Ingue Records'
-  Genre: 'Post-Rock' -  Release Date: 'September 2009'

Our Rating:
Ok, so the blurb that accompanies this single had me pretty excited for starters. That Hreda – a 3-piece instrumental band from Oxford – have played alongside Vessels, That Fucking tank and Don Cabellero amongst others is, for me, quite a recommendation. That Drownedinsound have likened them to ‘a heavier and more intricate Explosions in the Sky’ only fans my interest. Could be all hype, of course, but within moments of setting the disc going, I’m being swept away on an undulating tide of math-rock infused post-rock guitars.

While ‘Minnows’ stretches out for over seven minutes and is a sprawling epic in every sense, there’s great discipline involved here. The composition moves through carefully considered and strategically sequenced sections, the changes of texture and time signature delivered with precision timing. Somehow, it’s meticulous and organic at the same time. Similarly, there’s a lightness and a weight to the sound that occurs simultaneously. I’d probably say by way of a comparison that they’re like an instrumental Efflouresce era Oceansize. Only mathier, choppier, jazzier, post-rockier, groovier.

They’re touring extensively throughout August and September, and on the strength of his release, it could be well worth checking them out. I for one most certainly will be.
