Well, if you’re going to a cover, it’s important to make it stand out. There’s no point in throwing out some weak, pale imitation of the original. Because really, what’s the point? If you can’t improve on the original, or otherwise do something radical with it, don’t bother. Another golden rule of cover versions is that some songs shouldn’t be covered, because to do so is sacrilege.
Milow is clearly aware of all of this, and his version of 50 Cent’s track bears little resemblance to the original. This is a good thing. Milow – Jonathan Vandenbroek to his friends – presents a stripped-back acoustic rendition with vocals that are haunting and tinged with desperation, and as such successfully inverts the swagger of the original. Strange as it may sound, it is, in fact, really good.
It’s just a pity that it’s Fiddy and Justin Timberlake who’ll be making off the royalties of this release rather than Milow. Ho hum.
