'Here I am, on my own...' Brothers Movement singer Neil Paxton hollers from down a tunnel somewhere at the start of 'Standing Still,' as a thumping drum kicks along a metronomic clattering rhythm, every snare hit firing off echoes left, right and centre. A glam guitar enters the mix and before long the song's stomping along a treat.
With a sound like this is, it's hardly surprising that these guys have shared bills with rock deities like The Jesus and Mary Chain, MC5 and Sonic Youth and contemporary descendants Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. They may reference early Dandy Warhols and The Verve, but for my money are a far more exciting proposition. Like BRMC, they have a swagger, and still an ear for melody - as is well evidenced on flipside 'Lay Alone,' which is gentler than the a-side, but boasts a dark undercurrent beneath a breezy, almost surf-pop vocal.
Definitely a grower.
