I must admit that the prospect of a new girl band who do a line in basement rock / indie didn't exactly have me champing at the bit in terms of giving their debut single a spin and penning a review. Yeah, yeah, south London based, buzz, positive reviews... but these girls really are a 'Kut' above. It's easy to see why lead singer Maha's already managed an endorsement deal with Marshall Amps: they really do have something.
'Doesn't Matter Anyway' has a spiky new-wave edge, attitude in spades and the added bonus of melody and hooks that really dig deep. Sure, it's 80s as hell, but what isn't these days? What makes this a cracking tune is that it's a punchy three and a bit minutes in duration and has everything you'd want from a guitar-driven punk-pop song.

I'm not entirely sure if this is a double A-side, but 'Closure' could readily be a single in its own right, for all of the reasons 'Doesn't Matter Anyway' is so ace. It's a more mid-tempo number, but has some magnificent lolloping drums and a guitar line that's looping in the verses and ballsy in the choruses. Really, the fact it's 'retro' counts for nothing: what it's all about is well-considered songwriting and rocking out just at the right point.
Ok, so I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff, but this debut offering is seriously good.
