Review: 'DYNE, JULIEN'
'Pins & Digits'

-  Album: 'Pins & Digits' -  Label: 'BBE'
-  Genre: 'Dance' -  Release Date: '16th November 2009'-  Catalogue No: 'BBE143ACD'

Our Rating:
Chilled out vibes and some noodlesome jazzy keyboard work, are the foundation of 'Pins and Digits,' an electronic album that's laid-back, funky and smooth.

Alas, for all of its muso stylings and sleek production, 'Pins and Digits' feels rather inconsequential, too much about demonstrating Dyne's technical competence and not enough about songs that really go anywhere. That said, I feel the same about much contemporary jazz fusion, so perhaps it's less Dyne than his chosen genre that leaves me so unenthused. Put simply, it sounds smug and self-indulgent.

Of the 14 tracks here, 'Conglomerates' is a little more interesting than the rest, not least of all because while it follows the format of wiggly electronica over Latin-style bongo beats, it's rather less derivative than some of the other tracks, and sees Dyne pushing the sonic boat out into darker waters. However, clocking in at under two minutes, I can't help but feel that there are depths and directions left unexplored that would have made the piece more interesting still.

Other than that, it's a fairly lengthy meander through a set of jazzed-up muzak for funksters, and it just ain't my bag.
