It shouldn't work: big, searing guitars topped with poppy vocals that are almost bubblegum aren't exactly an obvious combination. Nevertheless, work it does. 'When You Tell Me That You Love Me' might be a bit of a mouthful by way of a title, but it's a concise and melodic blast of pure grunge-pop, like the Pixies with a sweet female vocal instead of Frank Black's trademark yelp. Their own preferred 'sounds like' reference of Dinosaur Jr's guitars with The Primitives' Tracy Tracy singing is pretty much spot on.
