Our Rating:
...undone was the The Lucy Show 's debut album in 1985. At that time their future looked bright but that was before they were inexplicably dumped by A&M moguls.

Their follow up, Mania, came out in the following year (also reissued by Words On Music) on the ironically named Big Time Records but their career faltered again when that label went bankrupt.

The band called it a day in 1988.

Load all the songs and data on The Lucy Show into the most state of the art computer and it would not be able to give any logical explanation as to why the London based quartet remain a footnote in Post Punk history books while bands they strongly resemble, like Teardrop Explodes and The Cure, made it big.

After all, aside from some misjudged psychedelic phasing at the end of the title track this is the kind of solidly tasteful guitar pop that used to be a staple of Top of the Pops.

On the single, Ephemeral (This is no heaven), the vocals are highly reminiscent of a youthful Julian Cope. And this melodic, vaguely anthemic tune is followed on the album by Resistance which sounds like a slightly speeded up version of The Cure's 'A Forest'.

These opening tracks alone show they were pushing all the right buttons, and yet...and yet..... .what is missing is that vital, unquantifiable spark that makes the difference between the good and the great.

...undone is a smooth and efficient record, with 11 perfectly decent songs - albums with far less have been deemed 'classics' - but this one wasn't so lauded and sadly won't be now.

Without doubt, it justifies being reissued but it remains a period piece by just another of Pop's might-have-beens. Life can be hard on the underdogs.
