There's nothing like the shrill sound of feedback, a blast of buzzsaw guitars and clattering percussion to shake a listener from their mediocre music-induced slumber, and that's just how The Lucid Dream launch this 4-tracker, with the all-out sonic assault of 'I Got the Devil.' With a dirty, distorted, top-end heavy and highly repetitive riff, drumming straight off an Adam and the Ants record and vocals that sound like they're coming from the bottom of a very deep well, it's a short and blast of sludge rock played to perfection.
'Jesus Say My Prayers' and 'I Feel So Lonesome (I'm Blue for You)' aren't nearly as full-throttle, but there's menace in the reverb-drenched moodiness, and the Jesus and Mary Chain are the most obvious reference point. However, I also note with interest that the EP was mastered in Los Angeles by David Cooley, who has worked with, amongst others, The Black Angels, and there's a density and haziness to the sound that places The Lucid Dream in the same bracket.

The monumental crescendo of 'I Feel So Lonesome' segues into 'The Twilight End,' which falls somewhere between the Black Angels and early Ride or Chapterhouse at their best. It's perhaps the most accessible track on the EP, a melodic and slightly tripped-out shoegaze number that drifts toward its swirling climax of crashing cymbals and drone guitar.
Genuinely exciting stuff.
